CADIZ, BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Thought to be one of the oldest towns on the Iberian Peninsula. It was founded by the Phoenicians in 1100BC under the name of Gadir as an important trading post. It was later under the control of the Carthaginians, then the Romans.

Cadiz and its surroundings were the original settlement of the Tartessos civilization, they were masters of trading as well as of the process of working with metals, especially copper.

After the discovery of America the city also used as a base for Spanish treasure fleets. In 1587 ships of the Spanish Armada gathered in Cadiz harbor before setting sail for England, and in 1805 the French fleet left from Cadiz before the Battle of Trafalgar. In 1812 the Spanish Parliament met in Cadiz to establish the first liberal constitution, known as La Pepa.

The old port of Cadiz is noted for its lovely setting. It is built on a rock platform jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The town’s massive ramparts protect it against the force of the waves. It has tall white houses, many of which have miradores (lookout towers) and azoteas (roof terraces).

A recommended walk in the evening is along the sea front and its promenade to the Castle of San Sebastian. Another of the most pleasant aspects of Cadiz is its lovely parks, among which are those of Genoves, Alameda Marques de Comillas and Alameda de Apodaca, which are the most attractive.

The old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets opening out on pleasant squares. Its central point is Plaza de la Niña, shaded by palms and lined by elegant buildings

The cathedral features a golden dome and a baroque facade. It was built in the 18th and 19th centuries and hoards of gold and silver treasures and gems may be seen in the museum. Its most precious piece is a processional cross by Enrique de Arfe, which is brought out for the Corpus Christi procession. In the crypt is the tomb of the Spanish composer, Manuel de Falla (1876-1946), who was born in Cadiz and drew inspiration from Andalusian folklore.

The Cadiz Museum features some great canvases by Zurbaran and works by Murillo. An interesting item in the Historic Municipal Museum is a 19th century mural of the drawing up of the 1812 constitution.

Its masterpiece is a model of the town as it was in the 18th-century, beautifully worked in ivory and mahogany and showing all the streets and houses in minute detail.

PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA, CADIZ

The small fishing port of El Puerto is noted for its sherry and brandy bodegas and a tour of one is recommended. The town lies on the mouth of the Guadalete River and features a busy port, lively streets and miles of sandy beaches.
